I think this is a bug:

1. I have renamed a category. It displays on front page with new name but in the back-end list it still has the name it was created with.

2. I have a block on the main menu. I renamed it in the back end, but the code does not update. I have to edit the code manually to change the text in the menu bar.

What do you mean by rename ?
The name of the block is only to identify it, it serves no purpose while displaying something in the forum.

Thanks. For first point, I mean Dashboard/Categories - I can click 'edit', put a new string in the first field and save. The Dashboard/Categories page does not update.

You can change it with phpMyAdmin.

@James7 thanks will do it tomorrow. Does mentions work when there is more than 10 names with similar beginnings?????

It will show the first 10 names that matched, you can then type the next letter to filter out if there are many similar names.
