I believe that the toolbar above the text box should have more options, such as Underline, Color, Highlight, Smiley Dropdown- Showing all created smileys, Strikethrough, Source, Special Characters, Iframes, Links and Emails, Left, Center, Right, and Justify format, Fonts, Size, Style, Tables, Lines, Page-Break, and more..

I just came up with these from CKEditor... you should add the ability to customise the needed buttons in the admin menu...

Initially we had thought of having a full fledged WYSIWYG editor(similar to CKeditor)..

The big problem was that, all those formatting made the posts look very ugly on a mobile device. sometimes ruining the entire layout of the page.

the second issue was the load time for the editor.

the essentials are there in the toolbar and rest of the options you are looking for are already there, you can apply things such as underline, page-break, left,right ,center,strikethrough etc using markdown and BBcode.

I understand that, however, I'm am targeting an audience where not all know BBCode and as I said before it will be optional... so the administration can add/remove formatting options. Besides, the essentials for me include size, color selection tool, underline, Dropdown for smileys,and the ability to link to emails.

Agree with @typad1 . Markdown and BBCODE are not easy to use, especially for a normal user.
