I wonder if it would be possible to change the url from:

http://domain.com/category/catname
into:
http://domain.com/catname

(so without the word category into the URL)

Same for the topics:
http://domain.com/topic/242/topname
into
http://domain.com/242/topname

And also, how can I set the tags (if any) as the meta-keywords for the individual topic pages so that Google can find them?

In case of conflict let the system solve the problem. E.g add a number if the "word" is alredy used. Wordpress handle very good this issue.

That would be difficult because we have different tables for topics, categories,posts and pages.

It would give a performance hit to check all the tables for uniqueness.

Wordpress does not have such segregation so it is easier for them.

But, we will definitely give it a thought and implement it if we find a easier solution.

What about this structure:

Categories url: forum.tld/category-name
Topics url: forum.tld/category-name/topic-name.topicID#postID

So, even if there are the same words used, the topics are different because they have the category name and the ID in the url. The topic ID makes the 'uniqueness'.
For SEO friendly and pretty URL you have to really get rid of the /forum/index.php?u=/topic/ and /forum/index.php?u=/category/ tags from the URL struckture. I think the ID numbers will solve the problem and CF will have nice and sexy clean URLs.

For SMF there is a mod called Pretty Urls which has solved this problem for example, and I think you should be able to do it too.
E.g look this here is a board https://www.zerion.net/temat/
and this a topic inside this board https://www.zerion.net/temat/rritet-taksa-per-blerjet-online/

Otherwise, CD seems real to be a great piece of forum application
