After I change the path to "/" where elgg is installed I keep getting the following error:

that error is one of a kind, that error is very very rare. please provide the file path to the file where elgg settings are stored and not the "/".
I guess the page where you entered the path tells you which path it expects.

Here is what is on the page before making any changes:

Elgg installed folder => /home/content/03/8489603/html/mod/chat/vendors/

Please make sure freichat directory is in main Elgg installed directory

File Permissions
arg.php is writable

engine/settings.php is not readable

Check file path to your engine/settings.php :

With this path "/home/content/03/8489603/html/mod/chat/vendors/engine/settings.php" already entered by default. I change the path to just "/" which should point to the root of my site www.thechattersbox.com where I have elgg installed. If I put anything else in the field the red "is not readable" does not go away.

The above installation instructions indicate to put the freichat directory in the main Elgg installed directory. I have tried ftping the chat folder and the freichat folder into the root directory, but that has not helped.

change the permission of settings.php to 755.
freichat directory must be in the same location where the index.php of elgg exists.
If you still have trouble use the "contact us" form and request a free install.

I uploaded the entire chat folder/directory from the plugin download up to www.thechattersbox.com/ and changed the permissions from 604 to 755 in the settings.php file in the /engine directory. I than uploaded just the freichat folder/directory to www.thechattersbox.com/ as that is where the index.php file is located. I am still getting the same error message. I believe I have followed your suggestions to the letter. If I misunderstood please let me know. I have also submitted the contact us form requesting the free installation.
