Notifications

I don't really undestand what is the point of the notifications here. From what I see we will get notifications only in topics we open or subscribe. But for a forum and a community, I think, is very important to be notified about the activitiy in general (number of new topics, posts ect). E.g, I need to know which are the new topics opened since the last visit. I dont't mean to flood the user with notifications, but some like these mentionened above are imporant. Or you just need to see the classic forums, plus the social networks (twitter, fb, G+) to find the best middle way.
Another problem I see here, is that when you have checked the notifications bell, will get "No new notifications". Maybe is better to have it the facebook way, with the last notifications still there.

Regards.

Hi,

About the notification list i would love it will display always the last 5-10 notifics always like you said.

Yeah, that is a nice suggestion.
We will see if we can implement it .

At least I would like to be notified for the new topics opened since dhe last visit.

All new topic by last visit will have the label new when you login again, and in the category list you will see unread messages since last visit.

It is just a number, I don't know which of these topics are new. In a busy forum you can't really know what is really new without notifications.

vBulletin http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/ has these New Topics
Today's Topics

SMF has http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=unread and http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=unreadreplies for the logged users.
But this is the old way, you have to click something to see these. The next generation forum like CF should use Notifications to solve this need.

The next generation forum like CF should use Notifications to solve this need.

Can you expand on this ?
In a busy forum notifying for every new thing that happens would soon lead to a notification explosion for the user.
This the reason, we have subscriptions so that the user is notified of only what he needs.
Or may be you meant something else ?

Not for every new thing: to my opinion more important are the notifications about the new topics. Something like "since your last visit there are X new topics opened. This, this and this". And you can limit the number of these notifications. If there are way too much just notify for a limited number...let's say for 10 or 20.
The subscriptions are for the topics you have seen or visited, but not for the new acticity you don't know about. Just look at the way how the old forums handle this. You just do the same, but not one or two links that have to be clicked, but with the notification bell.

Discourse has a nice feature that I like a lot. Even as a visitor you will get live notifications if there are new posts or topics.
