i got the same issue. Tried a bit arround bit couldn't figure out a fix.
Is there a fix availible?

I'm using the latest XAMPP Bundle (Apache/2.4.37 (Win32) OpenSSL/1.1.1a PHP/7.3.1).

Can you try this:

Open installation/smart_ajax.php

On line 1132, replace

    $smart->{$x()};

with

    $smart->$x();
